A trapdoor is a block that behaves similarly to the door, but allows the player to open it by clicking on it in Creative Mode. Like doors, they can be placed on sides of other blocks or flat surfaces. Like some other blocks you can interact with while playing Survival Mode, they will not drop when mined instead they will just pop off the surface if all adjacent blocks are removed, or fall as an item if there are no support blocks adjacent (for example, if placed on the side of a wall).

This makes them easier to get rid of than some other drops like torches and ladders which will always drop when broken. Opening them under water doesn’t produce water particles through the entire opening animation. Trapdoors also cannot be opened if they are on a side of a slime block.

Material required

You need 5 wooden planks (not the item, but made in your crafting table) and 1 stick to make it. Since trapdoors replace doors when placed, you can place them where doors would go and vice versa. You also can’t open them while standing on top of one like you can with regular doors (but you still close them by right clicking).

How to make a trap door in Minecraft?

In Minecraft, you can make a trap door from 6 wooden pieces found under Decoration > Miscellaneous on your Crafting Table if you have completed learning the recipe for creating Cobblestone Walls. Once crafted, place this new item somewhere nice within your house or another base or structure that’s designated specifically for housing any Traps. Placing it somewhere else might not be such a good idea because it’s likely to make the Trap Door vulnerable to potential theft or vandalism.

Now that the Trap Door’s interface is open, keep clicking on where you have placed it, namely within your inventory. Each time you do so, a new copy of the Trap Door will randomly appear at the point in which you clicked. You can carry up to 64 copies in a single slot if they are stacked in groups of four. Drag this down so that all the pieces are side by side and then close the window again with an “Okay” button located at the top-right corner.

Trapdoors are useful blocks in Minecraft. If you want a door that you can open and close for a ladder you can use a trapdoor in place of a regular door. They come in many different variants for each of the different types of wood you can collect in Minecraft.

Mycelium is a rare variant of an exceptional land that exists naturally in mushrooms Island. It is found only in this area. It has a special kind of effect, like tiny spores. It is a type of dirt block with purple-gray strands showing foreign particles.

Trapdoor by the use of hatch or lid

If there is no block under the trapdoor, or that block is unable to support it due to missing supporting blocks beneath it, then the trapdoor will pop off into an item form if mined with a pickaxe or shovel, or will just disappear. This makes it useful for player traps. You can’t use the trapdoor while standing on it (like while riding a pig). It will automatically close when you get off.

This type of trapdoor is made with 4 wooden planks and 1 stick to create the middle holder, then 6 more sticks for the outward facing parts. The “hatch” or “lid” can be placed by right clicking it in the space above an open block such as a hole in the ground, but cannot be opened until there is another surface for it to rest upon which could be removed by placing dirt or cobblestone under that side of the trapdoor to drop it into place.

How you can get this?

You can get this item by right clicking a pickaxe on a normal wooden door or pressing use item button with a pickaxe in your hand when facing a door if it is in the open position (no need to click when closing). This will destroy the door when done correctly. If you do not have a pickaxe when using this command, you will only receive wood from the door with no change to how it looks. You cannot a door without mining its supporting blocks first, which will cause it to drop as an item.

Note: Doors cannot be placed directly on the top of blocks, but you can place them inside a hole in the wall with at least 1 block of space above it. Then you can break the bottom block and replace it with any material. To place a door below ground level (and close off the “hole”), you may need to remove some supporting blocks so that there is not more than one block of air above it.

If water is touching your door, then it will never be able to close fully because water always displaces non-source blocks. As stated before, trapdoors are useful for player traps by placing two parallel 2-block high tunnels down where one holds open and the other closed, then waiting for the player to fall into the trap.

Common misconceptions

It’s pretty common to think you can make a trapdoor over a small hole like you do with regular doors, but that doesn’t work because you will need at least 1 block of space above it (either air or another platform). You can’t place it on top of a fence without removing the fence first.

Crafting recipes

These are all made from crafting tables. All types have three parts: The middle block, the “Hatch”, and the two sticks.

Notes: Trapdoors can also be made out of wool in a similar way to make a fence gate. To make a trapdoor out of any wooden plank version (without switching planks), you have to break it first before placing another type. They will not stack with each other. This means that if you have multiple different types in your inventory then one has to be selected as active by left-clicking on it or having it highlighted in the hotbar, then placed down which will destroy all others of that type if they are present.

Using torch

There is one exception where planks can be used for this purpose though. If you place down a torch, you are given the message “You can’t place that there”, but if you break it, you are rewarded with a plank. So therefore torches are the only way to change between different types of planks without switching them first in your inventory.

Note: This is also true for all wooden stairs. It just does not say anything when placing down.

How do you make a secret trapdoor in Minecraft?
